The Big Issue

Media Language and Representation exam

Media language:
  • How the media through their forms, codes, conventions and techniques communicate meanings
genre conventions of camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene
  • How are these elements used together to construct the media form so that it looks the way it does?
  • How are these elements organised or combined in a certain way to communicate meaning in the set product?
  • How does the genre develop?
  • How does the content incorporate the viewpoints and ideology of the producer?

Media Representation:
  • Which different groups, individuals and or events are presented or shown in each set product?
  • What positive or negative stereotypes are evident and why?
  • What messages and values are communicated about different groups, individuals and or events?
  • What conclusions can we make about the representations?
  • Which groups are misrepresented and under-represented?
  • How are representations constructed as real?

Minecraft Construction

Minecraft Construction Task

Every successful media construction requires research, planning, production and evaluation.

Even though sales are stronger than ever, Minecraft are trying to encourage all those young Fortnite fans to fall in love with the game as much as the older teens. You have been hired to come up with some merchandise ideas for Minecraft targeting both genders and aimed at a 7-16 audience.

Create a google slide or similar and include:

Research
What has been some of most successful merchandise aimed at this age group so far. eg Star Wars, Toy Story, Frozen

What other Minecraft merchandise is available currently? Show some examples.

Planning
Look at some print adverts and decide what the conventions are. Plan a design or describe your idea.

Production
Choose the programme you'd like to make your product on and design your product making sure you believe in its success and that it fits print advert conventions.

Evaluation

What was the task you were assigned?

What programme did you use to complete your task?

What tools did you use from your programme to create your task ie font websites, crop, colour changes etc?

What were the biggest obstacles to completing your task?

Describe your production and why you chose the various text headings and images?

What was your initial feedback? What did others say about your production?

Identify what went well and with hindsight what would you do differently?
